Choosing
a LASIK Doctor – 5 Tips
Because
the ultimate result of any LASIK
procedure is highly dependant
upon the doctor’s skill level
and experience, choosing a doctor
is the most important aspect of preparing
for LASIK. Unfortunately, since LASIK
is such a popular procedure, many
potentially dodgy ‘discounters’
have sprung up over the past few years.
So how can prospective LASIK patients
protect themselves from shoddy LASIK
providers? Be cautious. Here are five
things to keep in mind:
1) The surgeon should be play an
integral role both pre and postoperatively,
as well as during follow-up appointments.
Your eyes should be both examined
prior to surgery and monitored afterwards
by the surgeon.
2) LASIK should probably make up
a major part of the doctor’s
practice.
3) Most reputable refractive surgeons
agree that 1,000 LASIK procedures
is the general benchmark of an experienced
surgeon.
4) Your surgeon needs to explain
the potential risks
and complications of LASIK during
your preoperative exam. Failure
to do so signals a disreputable
surgeon. Any patient who encounters
such a doctor should walk out the
door.
5) Although you should certainly
avoid undergoing LASIK with discount
laser centers, price
should never be the deciding factor
when selecting a refractive surgeon.
Do not let a ‘bargain’
or even a lower price sway your
opinion of a particular surgeon.
Likewise, high price does not necessarily
correlate to talent. Do your homework!
