Am I a Candidate?
With
a complication rate of about 5%, physicians
consider the LASIK
procedure is relatively safe. Patients
across the country are raving about
the positive effect LASIK has had
on their lives. However, not everyone
is a good candidate for LASIK. Certain
individuals, in fact, should avoid
the procedure at all costs.
Only
a qualified refractive
surgeon can determine whether
or not a person is a good candidate
for LASIK; however, a person may be
a candidate for the procedure if he
or she:
- Does not have a thin cornea
- Does not have large pupils (when
dilated)
- Does not have certain eye diseases
(e.g. lupus or Sjogren’s syndrome)
- Does not suffer from dry eye
- Is not less than 18 years of
age
- Has had stable vision for a year
before surgery
- Has never had a herpes infection
of the eye
- Does not have scarring on the
cornea
- Understands that there are certain
risks
involved with any surgery, including
LASIK.
- Is not pregnant.
